Close your eyes and “flashback” to the 80’s TV show MacGyver for just a moment. Remember how he adapted and escaped from dangerous situations he never saw coming?
What MacGyver did to solve problems still rings true today. He used “principles” (defined as thoughts or actions that can applied across MULTIPLE self-defense situations) to protect himself.
I am huge proponent of principle-based learning because it enables us to respond during unexpected situations, because kidnappers are really good at abducting or hurting us in ways we can’t plan for.
So don’t lose sight that ALL the specific self-defense moves we might teach our children shouldn’t get in the way of the MAIN principle to “never let him move you” or “get to the ground to slow him down.”
