What if a kidnapper has a weapon… Now what? Is there any hope left?

by John Hall on April 12, 2010

Former police officer Tim asks,”Do you have a video clip on how a child should react if the perp has a weapon?”. Man Tim, this is a tough one, but I’m glad you asked, because…

It is a heckuva lot easier to abduct someone using a weapon, because weapons “freeze” us, like deer headlights. “Just run or yell” sounds so doable and easy, however, the thing is…

Kidnappers usually hold your child tight with one hand, and have their weapon in the other. Then they will whisper something like, “Just do what I say, and I won’t hurt you…”

With all this going on in a second or two, almost every one of us would go with him, hoping he means what he says. And we all know how this usually ends… So what can your children possibly do?

First, it is really important to understand there are two types of criminals with weapons:

1. “Attackers” begin shooting or cutting us wherever we are.

2. “Kidnappers” use a weapon as a threat to move us to a 2nd, deserted place.

See the difference? Kidnapper’s focus on MOVING us, not hurting us in the first place.

So the Grip, Dip & Spin™ principle of “stay where you are, because the FIRST location is always the most public” remains unchanged; BUT with a couple little twists that I have summarized below:

1. Pretend the weapon isn’t there.

2. Ignore their words.

3. Run if they aren’t holding* you.

*If they are, and you are “frozen” then:

4. Drop so he loses control (and his grip).

5. “Crab walk” under something (see free video).

Out of arm’s reach?

6. Now Run like h-e-double-toothpick -:)

I have a got a 5 minute VIDEO from my INSTRUCTOR DVD where I tell the story about a 12 year-old who escaped from a kidnapper with a gun in a mall parking lot using these moves.

The weapons footage is FREE for everyone who registers for my online video and blog subscription.
